Two Roosevelth High School students are in trouble after bringing a gun to school. A 15 and 16-year-old were arrested after pointing it at students in class.
Sioux Falls Police say only one student brought a BB gun to school Wednesday morning but he and another student were messing around with it.
"This is a very realistic looking metal bb gun and he had been racking the slide on the gun. Another student heard that and asked if he had a gun and he said yes," said Officer Sam Clemens.
It was then, that the two teens started pointing the BB gun at students walking in and out of their classroom.
"One of them put his hand inside the back pack, grabbed hold of the gun, didn't take the gun out of the backpack but it was pressed up against the nylon so the end of the gun was clearly visible to other people, said Officer Sam Clemens.
The BB gun most likely wouldn't have caused any major injuries, but police were concerned it looked like a real gun.
"It's a scary situation especially when you have a gun that acts real and looks real, you never know what those people are going to do," said Officer Sam Clemens.
A concerned student told school officials, who then notified police. Once the situation was under control and police found the backpack with the BB gun in a classroom cabinet, parents were notified.
"We will be very quick on the draw to make sure that people that this incidents handled, and it over, and it's done," said Superintedent Dr. Pamela Homan.
The teens will be expelled from school for no less than 12 months, the Superintendent will then decide their fate in the classroom.
"My job is to look on a case by case basis whether or not that expulsion holds for a full year," said Dr. Homan.
The students were arrested for having a weapon on school grounds and aggravated assault, which is considered a felony. The 16-year-old will also face charges for having synthetic marijuana.
The names of the students haven't been released because they are juveniles.
