Snow & Rain Totals Monday

Storm number 1 for this week is making its exit and was one that made for a pretty messy day. Rain, sleet, and snow filled the skies of South Dakota Monday and in some cases, all three at once. Temperatures were slightly above freezing at the surface, but there were also other layers of the atmosphere that were slightly above freezing, which made some of the precipitation melt as it was headed to the ground. This is the primary reason why we had so many types of precipitation falling and in some cases, all at once. Now, if you don’t like the snow, then this was good news for you because snow totals were much lower then what they could have been. For instance, if the atmosphere was just 2 or 3 degrees colder, precipitation would have been all snow and some areas could have received as much as 8 inches. But thanks to the unseasonably warm air, many locations stayed under 2 inches with just a handful of spots climbing above that. The snow totals for this storm are as listed below. The liquid precipitation totals are also listed below which involves rain, sleet, and snow that gets into the gauge. In many cases when it’s snowing, these totals will be low because snow is tough to catch, so the areas that received mostly snow might be 25 to 50 percent low. But this gives you an idea of the amount of liquid water we have seen today, and for the farmers, it is much needed. |
