MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State led the majority of the game in the 2012 State Farm Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) men’s basketball championship game Sunday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans defeated their former Dakota Athletic Conference rival Jamestown (N.D.) 80-71.  It was the first-ever A.I.I. conference tournament title in their first-year membership of the conference.

Dakota State, which recorded their second-straight upset victory over nationally-ranked teams in two days (defeated No. 25 Valley City State 82-73 on Saturday night), raised their overall record to 18-12.  Jamestown, No. 8 in the latest NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball national tournament, dropped their record to 25-6.

The Jimmies only had their lead at 5-4 with eighteen minutes and 13 seconds in the first-half.

With DSU leading at 16-13 with less than 13 minutes left before intermission, the Trojans used a 9-2 run to gain a double-lead at 25-15 (10:17 left before halftime).

Jamestown would cut their deficit to one-point at 34-33 with 2:40 remaining before halftime (18-9 run).

Dakota State earned a 42-34 halftime lead.

DSU shot 58.6 percent from the field (17-for-29) compared to the Jimmies’ 50 percent (12-for-24) in the game’s first twenty minutes.

The Trojans maintained control through the rest of the second-half.  The Jimmies got no closer than one point (63-62) with less than five minutes remaining in the game.

Dakota State closed the game with a 17-9 run for the victory.

DSU was 21-for-32 from the free-throw line in the second-half, while JC converted two free-throws in five attempts.

Spencer Adams tallied in 21 points for the Trojans.  He had six rebounds and four assists.  Keith Biggers added 16 points on his 7-for-8 shooting from the field.  He grabbed eight rebounds.  Jesse Bean scored 15 points and recorded four assists.  Donald Stewart had 11 points and recorded two blocked shots.

Bryon Jones scored 21 points for the Jimmies.  Travis Burley added 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds.  Drew Preiner and Davon Thomas each had 13 points.  Preiner had five assists and eight rebounds.

Dakota Sate shot 51 percent overall from the field (25-for-49) compared to the Jimmies’ 44.1 percent (26-for-59).  Jamestown drained 10 3-pointers in 25 attempts (40 percent), while DSU was 7-for-16 from the 3- point arc.

The Trojans made 23 free-throws in 34 attempts (67.6 percent).  JC was 9-for-15 from the free-throw line (60 percent).

Both teams had 33 rebounds in the game.

Jamestown and Dakota State will head to the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. from March 7-13.  The opponents and times will be determined after all conference tournaments are completed on Tuesday night.  The national tournament’s bracket will be announced later this week.
