Precipitation Amounts Expected for our Upcoming Major Winter Storm

What has been a relatively tranquil winter has now turned into a blast from the past, as the strongest winter storm of the season is moving into the area. The saving grace for many of us that don’t want the snow is that the strength of this storm may actually prevent many of us from receiving a large amount of snow. This is because this storm is strong enough to bring A LOT of warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, which could keep many areas south of highway 14 in the rain. But those of us in the north aren’t so lucky with plenty of snow and wind to go around. There is a big concern though, that the warm air will bring areas of freezing rain. Ice accumulation could become a problem in many portions of the east Tuesday as warm air rides over the frozen ground producing rainfall. But because temperatures at the surface are below freezing, that rain then freezes on contact and can create very hazardous travel. But regardless if you will see rain, snow, or something in between, there will be tons of precipitation with this storm so get prepared for a pretty messy couple of days. Below is the forecast for the timing of precipitation changing from one type to the next as well as how much rain, ice, and snow you can expect. Stay safe!!
