Firefighters in Brookings have contained a fire in a livestock building owned by South Dakota State University.
Crews responded to the fire at the cow/calf unit on land north of the SDSU campus around 4:30 a.m. Friday. The 1950s building filled with 20 tons of hay was engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived. Officials report bales of hay remain on fire, but they're being removed from the building and placed in a field.
Fire officials say no one inside the building was hurt, although one firefighter suffered minor injuries when he slipped and fell. All cattle in the building were removed safely, including four pairs of calves.
A tractor, pickup truck, and feeder wagon inside the building were destroyed. Authorities say a agriculture student who came to check on the animals helped remove them from the building.
There was no immediate word on the cause. KDLT News has a crew in Brookings and will bring you more details as they become available.
