A national organization is set to discuss how much U.S. elderly people need to earn to cover basic living expenses, with a focus on South Dakota residents.
Wider Opportunities for Women, based in Washington, D.C., will present its research at a public event on Wednesday at the Main Library in Sioux Falls.
The information comes from its "Elder Economic Security Standard" Index, developed with the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. The index ranks states and Washington, D.C. according to each one's shortfalls between income and necessary expenses.
The event will provide information on elderly residents in the state's 66 counties.
