Gray Wolf Kill Confirmed In Western SD

Bookmark and Share

Testing has confirmed that an animal killed near Custer earlier this year was a protected gray wolf.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the wolf's genetics indicate it likely wandered in from the western Great Lakes area.

The gray wolf is federally protected in western South Dakota, where sightings are rare. State wildlife officials say the last confirmed wolf in the region was hit by a vehicle in March 2006.

The latest wolf was killed six weeks ago. Federal wildlife officials continue to investigate and have not released details.
