March is national colon cancer awareness month and in South Dakota tomorrow is Lynch Syndrome Awareness Day.
Folks at the American Cancer Association are trying to spread awareness about lynch syndrome which is the most common cause of hereditary colon cancer.
Officials say it's important to check your family history to get regular screenings.
"This year in South Dakota the American Cancer Society estimates that about 420 cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed, of which 160 individuals will lose the fight,” said Jill Ireland of the American Cancer Society.
Officials say lynch syndrome accounts for nearly 5% of all colon cancer cases.
