Super Pooch Saves Family From Fire

Bookmark and Share

The Avenell’s love both their dogs but their ten-year-old black lab; Portia is more than just a loveable pet for this family. They say he's a hero.

Last Tuesday Adriana loaded her dishwasher and then went to bed. But, just before drifting off Portia woke her up.

“She started barking like if I had someone inside of the house,” said Avenell.

And that’s usually the only time she barks.

“It was around nine o’clock at night and she starts barking, again. So, I came to the front to check if someone was here and I told her I said, ‘Portia nobody's home,’ said Avenell.

But when it happened the third time Adriana knew something was up.

So, I said, ‘ok something is wrong.’ So I said, ‘ok lets go see what is wrong,’” said Avenell.

She walked out of her bedroom and out into her hallway.

“And by the time I see some light coming from the kitchen. I go to the kitchen. I had high flames coming out of one of my appliances,” said Avenell.

Now her kitchen is completely gutted after her dishwasher caught fire. And if wasn’t for Portia, Adriana thinks it could have been a lot worse.

“The thing is she bought us some time to get out of the house safe. If it wasn’t for her we probably would have needed to jump out of the windows,” said Avenell

An undoubtedly frightening experience for the Avenell's who escaped safely as fast as they could.

“It is very scary when you close the door and you don’t know exactly why your house is on fire,” said Avenel.

A usually quite k-9 came to life when her family was in danger and her owners couldn’t be more proud.
