"Normal" Temperatures?

Bookmark and Share

After one of the warmest March's on record, many in the Sioux Empire have forgotten just what "normal" feels like. With temperatures forecasted to drop next week to near or even below normal it may just be a rude awakening especially for plants.
The warm streak continues after a record breaking March and it seems like it has no end. As of Wednesday, the Sioux Empire has had 32 consecutive days above average.

In fact, we have had the longest streak of above average temperatures in at least five years!

Temperatures will remain above average through the weekend however, a change is in the forecast and temperatures are forecasted to dip closer to average than we have seen in over a month. A cold front will pass across South Dakota Friday night and Saturday which will drop temperatures back into the 50's by Sunday.

With an early spring, many people may have already planted and even mother nature has started to bloom trees and flowers early. This could pose a problem at the end of the weekend when the back-side of a low pressure in Canada will force cooler air down into South Dakota. Easter Sunday morning may be particularly dangerous to sensitive plants as breezy winds and cool air flow as far south as northern Iowa and Nebraska.

Temperatures are forecasted to stay cool through Tuesday evening for the east and temperatures will likely stay at or even below normal through next Wednesday when warmer air returns.

With so many consecutive warm days it is hard to remember what is seasonal for this time of year. Temperatures in the 50's are normal for afternoon high's, that is around 20 to 40 degree's below where we have been lately. In fact so much cooler our "normal" afternoon high's are closer to some of our record warm low temperatures we have set in March. The "normal" spell will be short lived as a little warm up is expected at the end of next week. As always stay tuned to KDLT and KDLT.com as long range forecasts like this usually change.
