A former manager accused of stealing from an American Legion post in Rapid City has been sentenced to a short jail term, probation and restitution.
Richard Kiewel of Rapid City earlier pleaded no contest to a conspiracy charge and prosecutors dropped a grand theft charge. On Monday he was sentenced to 60 days in jail and five years on probation. He also must pay $4,600 in restitution together with his aunt, Shirley Woods of Rapid City. She pleaded guilty earlier to a misdemeanor.
Dozens of Legion members attended the sentencing. Some believe Kiewel embezzled $100,000 from the organization and they are not happy with the plea agreement. They say they were not consulted.
Pennington County State's Attorney Glenn Brenner says prosecutors did consult a representative of the Legion post.
