Some Voters Hope For A 'Shake Up'

Bookmark and Share

Certain issues like the Sioux Falls events center and the firing of City Clerk Debra Owen last year had some voters hoping for a shake up in the city council.

Political signs lined the parking lots outside voting centers across Sioux Falls, a final effort for candidates to reach out to voters before they made their decision.

Four seats are up for the Sioux Falls city council and two for the school board.

Despite this April election being smaller than a typical general election, some who came out Tuesday knew the importance of having their voice heard.

“If you don't vote, your voice isn't heard and you have no reason to complain,” said voter David Bratton.

Some who came to cast their ballot had their complaints.

“One of my fears is that the event center is going to cost more than the $115-million,” said Bratton.

One voter showed concerns with the way the city council handled the firing of city clerk Debra Owen.

“I think those are two prime examples of how city government shouldn’t work,” said Bratton.

One by one voters filled the ballot box. Some hoped for a change in city government.

“I do think they need a little uplift and hopefully this will do it,” said voter, Betty Hodge.

“I just hope the voters will turn out and put people in that they can trust,” said Bratton.
