SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -
No. 22 Augustana defeated Chadron State 11-2 in Game 1 before falling to the Eagles in Game 2, 5-2.
The Vikings' record now stands at 36-7 (13-3 NSIC) while Chadron St. moves to 14-27.
Ashley Meyer started Game 1 and improved to 17-3 after throwing 6.0 innings and giving up two runs while striking out three.
At the plate, the Vikings were led by Theresa McMahon, who finished 2 for 4 with five RBIs, including her 10th home run of the season.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Chelsi WInskowski led off with a double into left center before scoring on McMahon's two-run home run. Elizabeth Murray then walked with one out in the inning and later scored on a wild pitch during Kelsey Kalkman's at-bat to put the Vikings up 3-0.
Chadron St. answered in the top of the fifth when Amy Schartz hit a home run and Rebecca Wetsch scored on a single by Amanda Einspahr.
Augustana pushed the lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the fifth with a six-run flurry that featured three errors by Chadron St.
Jenny Brown walked to start the inning and advanced to second after a failed pickoff and an error by Stephanie Townsend. Murray hit a two-run home run on a full count to push Brown across, and after a pitching change, Jenelle Trautmann reached first after being hit by a pitch. Taylor Kapsch pinch ran for Trautmann and stole second during Lindsay Spanton's at-bat, who later walked to put runners at first and second.
Kelsey Kalkman grounded into a fielder's choice that forced Kapsch out at third, but the Vikings loaded the bases after Chelsey Durland reached on a fielder's choice and an error by Chadron State's Katie Londo. The Vikings scored again when Winskowski reached on an error by Einspahr. McMahon had the final three RBIs of the inning after hitting a double down the left side that scored Winskowski, Durland and Kalkman.
In the sixth inning, the Vikings ended the game early after Spanton doubled to left center with one out and Durland hit her second home run of the season over the left field fence, scoring Reinsma, who pinch ran for Spanton.
In Game 2, Trautmann took the mound but struggled through the first 2.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, including two home runs. Trautmann dropped to 15-4 for the season.
Durland threw the final 4.1 innings and allowed no runs and only five hits while striking out two batters.
Offensively, the Vikings were held hitless by Jessica Eatmon until the fifth inning when Matley Jones doubled with two outs. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Jones scored when Kapsch hit the first pitch of her at-bat up the middle for an RBI single.
Augustana scored again in the sixth, but left the bases loaded-killing a possible rally. Murray singled with one out before moving to third on a wild pitch. In the same at-bat, another wild pitch allowed Murray to cross the plate. With two outs, Spanton singled up the middle and Kalkman and Winskowski walked to load the bases. Jones pushed the count to 3-2 before hitting a ball into right field that was caught by a sliding Katelyn McBeth.
Augustana is home again tomorrow as it takes on No. 3 Winona State in a conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
