SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana head women’s basketball coach Dave Krauth announced Wednesday the signing of Sioux Falls native Chandler Nielsen, a senior at O’Gorman High School, for the 2012-13 season.

The 5-foot-6 guard was a three-time all-state, all-conference and state Class AA all-tournament team choice, who averaged 16 points per game as a senior. She ended her career as a Knight with 1,039 points to become O’Gorman’s second all-time leading scorer.

Nielsen also averaged 3.0 assists and 2.6 rebounds and shot 49 percent from the field during her senior campaign to garner all-city honors for the third-straight season. She was a nominee for South Dakota Miss Basketball, Spirit of Su and Gatorade Player of the Year and was also selected Argus Leader  top 5 and top 10.

“Chandler’s competitive spirit and grit are so apparent whenever she's on the court,” Krauth said. She has an excellent understanding of the game and is a proven winner. Chandler has also distinguished herself as a student and will be a great addition to the Augustana community.”

Nielsen was a three-sport athlete at O’Gorman and also received numerous tennis and track and field honors. Nielsen earned a state title in tennis twice and was named to all-state and state all-tournament teams. She was named all-conference in track and ran to the state title in the 800 meters.

Nielsen joins Riley Nordgaard from Canby Minn., and Sydney Rome from Sioux Falls (Roosevelt) in the Vikings' 2012-13 signing class.

Augustana was selected to the NCAA tournament for the 12th time in program history in 2011-12 and advanced to the semifinals of the Central Region tournament. Augustana finished 24-7 overall and 18-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference to place second in the final conference standings.

Located in Sioux Falls, S.D., Augustana College is a member of NCAA Division II and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
