South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says a Massachusetts man has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being caught with nearly half a ton of marijuana in his pickup truck when he was pulled over.
Donald McCormick, 40, of Ipswich, Mass., had been charged with several felonies. But he pleaded guilty last month to a single charge of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
The charge stemmed from a January traffic stop on Interstate 90 east of Rapid City. Authorities said a Highway Patrol trooper's drug dog detected bales of marijuana in the back of McCormick's truck.
The Highway Patrol has said the seizure of 947 pounds of marijuana is believed to be the biggest pot bust from a traffic stop in South Dakota history.
