CBB: Jacks Snap Summit League Losing Streak

Bookmark and Share

BROOKINGS, S.D. — Layne Somsen allowed only two hits and struck out eight in eight shutout innings to lead South Dakota State to a 3-1 victory over Oral Roberts in Summit League baseball action Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

In salvaging the final game of the four-game series, the Jackrabbits improved to 14-27-1 overall and 3-9 in league play. ORU dropped to 24-20 overall and 11-4 in The Summit League.

SDSU gained an early 1-0 lead thanks to a Golden Eagle error in the bottom of the first. Beau Hanowski led off with a base hit, was safe at second and advanced to third on an errant throw following a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Phelan. Zach Rhodes then delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Hanowski.

The Jackrabbits scored twice more in the second against ORU pitcher Drew Bowen. Daniel Marra led off with a double, Aaron Machbitz walked and both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice by Nick Andrews. After Andrew Melton struck out, Hanowski and Phelan came up with back-to-back run-scoring singles.

ORU threatened in the fifth as the first two batters of the inning, Jared Schlehuber and Brandon King, reached via a walk and hit by pitch. Following a sacrifice, Somsen worked out of the jam by striking out BennettPickar and inducing a flyout by Nate Goro.

After the pair of two-out singles in the second inning, Bowen did not allow a Jackrabbit hit until one out in the eighth.

Somsen, meanwhile, surrendered only a single by Cam Schiller in the fourth and a single by King in the seventh along with three walks before giving way to Shane Kraemer to start the ninth. Jose Trevino tripled with one out in the ninth and scored on a groundout by Schlehuber to account for theonly Golden Eagle run.

A junior from Yankton, Somsen recorded his first victory since the 2009 Summit League Championship after making only one appearance in 2010 and missing the entire 2011 season due to injury. Over his last five starts, Somsen has struck out 35 batters in 28 2/3 innings and is limiting opponents to a .184 batting average for the season.

Hanowski was 2-for-3 to lead the Jackrabbits’ six-hit effort.

Bowen struck out four and walked three in a complete-game effort.

SDSU closes out its nine-game homestand by hosting Oakland in a four-game Summit League series May 4-6 at Erv Huether Field.
