Hansen Up for D-II Player of Year

Bookmark and Share

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana's Derek Hansen is a semifinalist for the 2012 Tino Martinez Award for the top player in Division II baseball.

The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, United States Olympian, first-round draft pick and Major League Baseball All-Star, Tino Martinez.

Hansen, who was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year on Tuesday, is listed as a utility player on the list.  He also landed on the All-NSIC first team as a pitcher and first baseman.

Hansen's 2012 campaign on the mound was one for the record books. The right-hander from Fergus Falls, Minn., set Augustana and NSIC single-season records in strikeouts, fanning 97 batters in all games and 82 in conference contests. Hansen is 7-3 and owns a 1.19 ERA in 60.2 innings pitched. He's tossed two shutouts this season, and opponents are batting just .158 and haven't hit a home run off the junior. Five times this season he has struck out at least 10 batters. In the latest NCAA statistical report, Hansen is first in the country in strikeouts per nine-inning game at 14.38.  He was named NSIC Pitcher of the Week on April 9 and 24, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Central Region Pitcher of the Week on April 10 and 24 and NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week on April 11.

Offensively, Hansen leads the Vikings with a .357 batting average.  He's also tops on the team with 35 RBIs.  Hansen has hit nine doubles and seven home runs this season and has stolen 10 bases.  He was named NSIC Player of the Week on March 19 and NCBWA Central Region Player of the Week on March 20.

The 55 semifinalists represent 48 schools from across the nation. Each of the nation's eight regions are represented.

Initial nominations for the award were made by baseball sports information contacts and media members. A panel of media, coaches and sports information officers will be polled to finalize the candidates. The group will once again vote on the finalists, and a fan vote will also be held.  The finalists are scheduled to be named on May 21.
