Varilek And Barth Ready To Take On Noem

Bookmark and Share

The day before the primary election the two congressional candidates vying for the Democratic nomination are eager to grab as many votes as possible. But, when it comes to the issues, how different are Jeff Barth and Matt Varilek?

While Varilek maybe a generation younger than Barth, a Minnehaha County Commissioner, he believes his work with Sen. Tom Daschle and Sen. Tim Johnson gives him the experience edge.

“I had to work hard just to climb the economic ladder. I think those are a great combination and will allow me to do the kind of leadership South Dakotans deserve,” said Varilek.

But, Barth feels Washington needs a change of face.

“I think we need people that are different than what we've got,” said Barth.

Even within party lines, the candidates disagree on certain issues. Varilek believes tax cuts for the rich don't work.

“I said, from the beginning that I don’t think we can afford to renew those for the wealthiest Americans. (Barth) says he agrees with Kristi on that one and says he wants to extend them even for the millionaires and billionaires,” said Varilek.

While Jeff Barth, if given the option, says he would vote for gay marriage.

“That's how I would vote on it. I said, it’s not my issue but if it came up, I would vote for gay marriage,” said Barth.

Both are confident they can take on Kristi Noem in the fall.

“I'm really making the case that I'm the strongest person to challenge Kristi Noem in the fall,” said Varilek.

“I'm saying to you now, Kristi Noem, I'm challenging you to a debate. Show up,” said Barth.

In a primarily Republican state, two Democrats will go head to head in Tuesday’s primary election, hoping to challenge Kristi Noem in November.
