Welcome Summer

Bookmark and Share

Wednesday June 20th is the Official First Day of Summer otherwise known as the Summer Solstice.
Summer officially begins Wednesday night at 6:09pm CDT but will feel more like spring with much cooler temperatures and scattered rain showers.

(Summer Solstice 2012 Almanac)

The Summer Solstice is the offical start to the summer season and also the longest day of the year. Today daylight will last 15 hours and 25 minutes and now every day forward will be shortened until we reach the winter solstice (the shortest day of the year) in December.

After a few hot days with temperatures climbing into the 90's a cold front moved through just in time for the official start to summer and caused some heavy rain showers to move across the state late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

(24 Hour Preliminary Rain Totals valid 8:00am Wednesday)

Storms trained along a line from Valentine to Watertown, bringing some very heavy rainfall amounts in a short period of time. In a two hour span anywhere between 3 to 4 inches of rain fell in Watertown causing flash flooding of streets and even flooding first floor rooms at a Watertown Motel.

(24 Hour Temperature Change Valid 8am Wednesday)

Temperatures will stay cooler than seasonably average for Wednesday but warm back up into the low to mid 80's by Thursday when sunshine returns.

This week Meteorologists from the National Weather Service Office surveyed the damage from Father's Day's severe weather event and released the findings Tuesday.

(Summary of NWS Aberdeen Storm Survey)

(Summary of NWS Aberdeen Storm Survey)

Interesting to notice is the intensity of the winds. The Tornado which touched down in Cramers Resort was rated a high end EF-1 with winds around 105 to 110 miles per hour. Straight line winds in all three wind events were not far from the same intensity of the EF-1 Tornado confirmed in Cramers Resort. So it is important to remember that straight line winds can be just as damaging if not more damaging than Tornadoes.
