Canvas Painting at Sanford Health

A hospital stay can be a stressful experience for everyone involved, but a new art project has patients and guests at Sanford Health painting their worries away.

Three large murals are being painted in the main lobby of Sanford Health in Sioux Falls and will eventually be hung in the Vandemark Building's cafe.

But instead of hiring an artist to complete the masterpiece, Sanford's Art Program has turned this into a community project.

Jessie Park of Sanford Arts Program says, “It’s just meant as something to kind of either be a stress reliever or just take their mind off of whatever they’re coming to the hospital for.”

The mural paintings couldn't have been scheduled at a better time for the Bickford family. Ronda and her husband have spent the past 18 days at the hospital while their son, Cory, recovers from a seizure. Ronda says embracing her artistic side has really calmed her nerves.

“I feel really good. I think it brings the community together; the patients, the staff, and the families… Where everyone can be a part of something to share with the hospital,” says Bickford.

Artists like Ronda at Sanford Health are allowed to paint whatever they like. Ronda chose to paint flowers, each one representing one of her children and grandchildren.

Not only does she credit the hospital for saving her son's life, but the entire community for being so hospitable.

Bickford says, “You guys have been so good for us here. We kind of want to leave our mark here too to thank you guys.”

That’s a mark that will forever last on the walls of Sanford Health.

Patterns are available to help make the job a little easier for those less confident in their artistic abilities.
