ND, SD Add Law Enforcement Positions Through Grant

Bookmark and Share

Officials say a new federal grant that aims to hire veterans for law enforcement should fund eight officers in North Dakota and South Dakota.

The U.S. Department of Justice says the $111-million grant should create more than 600 new law enforcement positions around the country and save about 200 jobs either lost or in jeopardy because of budget cuts.

The Community Oriented Policing Services program, or COPS, will provide for two officers in Grand Forks, one in Fargo, two in Sioux Falls, S.D., and three troopers for the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

Officials say the specific grants were based on financial need and local crime rate.
