VERMILLION, S.D. - - Former South Dakota men’s basketball standout Charlie Westbrook has been selected to the Orlando Magic’s Summer League roster, the team announced on Tuesday. Westbrook is one of 15 players to be chosen for the team.
The Milwaukee, Wis., native will be part of the Magic team that will take part in the 20-game 2012 AirTran Airways Orlando Pro Summer League, which takes place July 9-13 in Orlando, Fla. That league also includes the Nets, Celtics, 76ers, Jazz, Thunder, Pacers and Pistons.
The 22-year-old Westbrook is listed as a 6-5, 196-pound guard on the Magic roster. He had a strong showing at the Portsmouth Invitational in Virginia earlier this spring, which allowed him to showcase his talents in front of NBA personnel executives and scouts. He averaged 12.3 points and 3.0 rebounds per game for the Norfolk Sports Club team.
Westbrook started 58 games for the Coyotes in his two-year career (2010-12), after transferring from Iowa Western Community College. Westbrook became the 23rd player under Coyote head coach Dave Boots, and 42nd in school history, to reach the 1,000-point mark as he ended his career with 1,009 points. He is the first two-year, junior college player under Boots to score 1,000 points.
He led the team in field goals made with 183 and shot .464 from the field, while knocking down 37 triples and had a team-high 121 made free throws. He averaged 4.0 rebounds per game and led the team with 48 steals to go along with 24 blocks and 62 assists. Westbrook became the first Coyote to earn all-conference honors in the Summit League as he was named to the second team in 2012.
