The two candidates for South Dakota's lone seat in the U.S. House will meet in a debate Aug. 22 to discuss agricultural issues.
The debate between Republican Rep. Kristi Noem and Democratic challenger Matt Varilek will be held in Mitchell as part of the annual Dakotafest farm show.
The event is being hosted by South Dakota State University and the South Dakota Corn Growers Association. It is the first confirmed debate between the congressional candidates.
Lisa Richardson, executive director of the Corn Growers Association, says the event will allow the congressional candidates to discuss issues important to farmers and ranchers. Questions will be submitted by people in the audience.
Varilek has said he would like to debate Noem a dozen times before the November election.
