People in the small South Dakota town of Hecla have a question: where the heck is the water going?
The northeastern community of about 225 bought 7.7 million gallons of water from a rural water system in the first six months of the year, but only 3.6 million gallons reached residents. Officials have no idea what happened to the rest.
Mayor Lloyd Trautmann that the problem goes back several years, and it has been getting progressively
worse. Town officials held a community meeting this week to talk about the problem with residents and ask them to help find the source of the leak. Trautmann says the town might have to raise water rates if the problem doesn't get fixed soon.
