Father, Son Charged With Raping 2 Girls

Bookmark and Share

A Huron father and son face charges after prosecutors say they raped two children at a daycare in their home.

Beadle County States Attorney Michael Moore says Fred Sylaart and Jordan Sylaart, who is 18 years old, are accused of sexually assaulting two girls who are under the age of 12. Moore says the incidents happened at a daycare run by the older Sylaart's wife.

Fred Sylaart is charged with two counts of sexual contact with a child under the age of 16. Jordan Sylaart is charged with two counts of first degree rape. Both men were indicted Sept. 14. He says both men have been released from jail on bond.

Moore says the allegations were first reported to police in late July by the girls' parents. The incidents involving girls under the age of 12 are alleged to have happened six months to a year ago.

Moore says the wife voluntarily closed the daycare, which is licensed by the state, when the investigation began.

Fred Sylaart is employed as a janitor for Beadle County. He was put on paid leave when the investigation began, and after the indictment was suspended without way. Moore says Beadle County Commissioners plan to terminate Sylaart after his next court appearance.

Both men are expected to be in court next on Oct. 23 in Beadle County.
