This afternoon in Downtown Sioux Falls, residents gathered at Sid's Liquor Store to celebrate a South Dakota Legend. At this very site 60 years ago South Dakota native, Al Neuharth, and colleague, Bill Porter, created SoDak Sports, a weekly newspaper dedicated to covering statewide sports. The paper only lasted two years, but that didn't stop Neuharth. He went on to create the nation's largest newspaper,USA TODAY.
Neuharth applied the lessons from his failure to become the success he is today.
Neuharth says, "Whenever you're trying to run as a business, whether it's a newspaper or anything else you have to take in enough money to pay the rent and have something left over and we didn't do that."
Al Neuharth is in town to present the 2012 Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in Media tomorrow night at the University of South Dakota.
