Drought Conditions Expand

After a record dry September for Aberdeen, Pierre, and Mobridge it shouldn’t be a surprise that the drought continues to get worse even though temperatures are tumbling. The common misconception is that colder temperatures actually help improve drought. In reality, most of the time it’s the exact opposite. Remember that colder temperatures hold less moisture, which means even drier air over parched ground. This can exacerbate the problem. Not to mention, with fall comes plenty of wind. Wind increases the rate of evaporation pulling even more moisture out of the soil and leading to further drying. The only thing that can alleviate this drought is rain, which we desperately need. Unfortunately though, there is little if any chance the next 7-days. For the latest drought information, check out the images below. |
