Tigers finish 9th in Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s golf team wrapped up the fall portion of the 2012-13 season Tuesday afternoon against some of the top teams in the nation at the Oklahoma City University Stars Fall Invite.

 

Six of the top 10 teams from the 2012 NAIA National Championships were in attendance at the meet, played at Lincoln Park-West in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Tigers took ninth out of 11 teams at the two-day meet. DWU shot a two-round total of 677 to finish 11 strokes behind the eighth-place finisher.

 

Lubbock Christian University, which took seventh at this year’s national championships, won the event with a 604. SCAD-Savannah – which finished runner up at nationals – took second with a 613, and Oklahoma City University was third with a 617. The Tigers shot a 338 Monday in the first round and were just shy of seventh, and shot a 339 Tuesday to finish with a 677.

 

Individually, freshman Lauren Fitts paced Dakota Wesleyan. She shot an 81 Monday and was tied for 28th, but shot a 78 in Tuesday’s second round to finish with a 159 and tie for 18th. Jenna Winckler and Chelsea Burback also recorded top-50 finishes. Winckler carded a 168 (85, 83) and tied for 40th and Burback shot an 83 Monday and an 89 Tuesday to finish with a 172 and tied for 47th.

 

Also for Dakota Wesleyan, Natalie Turner tied for 56th after shooting a 180 (90, 90) and Talia Peters shot a 180 and tied for 58th (91, 89).

 

Lubbock Christian’s Anna Schopp won the individual title with a 140 and SCAD’s Alazne Urizar took second with a 145. Oklahoma City’s Jessica Schiele rounded out the top three with a 149.

 

Dakota Wesleyan enters the spring season in first place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings. The Tigers hold a 29-stroke lead over Northwestern College. Individually, Fitts holds the lead and is six strokes ahead of Burback and Briar Cliff’s Dawn Chapman.
