It was a busy Thursday morning at Feeding South Dakota in Sioux Falls.
On Wednesday, the McGovern family made an announcement encouraging donations to the organization in lieu of sending cards or flowers to McGovern.
Ending world hunger is a cause George McGovern has been dedicated to the majority of his life. In his years he spent raising awareness to the cause, McGovern spent much of his time helping to support the organization in his home state.
Development Director, Kerri DeGraff said that McGovern is a legacy within the organization.
She said, “ He is a huge advocate and worked hard to talk about the issues of hunger, create awareness and let individuals know that it is a solvable issue.”
Ever since the McGovern Family made the announcement on Wednesday, donations have been pouring in. They have received everything from canned goods to bottled water to pet food. DeGraff said that donations have come from everywhere from Hawaii to California to Massachusetts. She also said they plan to let the family decide where the donations will go.
She said, “All the donations that will be coming in will be marked with Senator George McGovern's name and then we will work with the family to figure out where they want those funds to be granted.”
The most important part of their mission is to keep McGovern's legacy alive long after he is gone.
