October is national domestic violence awareness month and the Compass Center in Sioux Falls is working to get the message out.
The center serves victims and offenders of domestic and sexual violence in southeast South Dakota. Executive director Patty Brooks says their need is increasing, but funding is drastically decreasing.
The center served 889 victims last year, and already this year they have seen at least 1,300. The Compass Center’s biggest budget cut was their registered play therapist. That therapist works with victims ages three to 12.
Brooks says the Compass Center is the only agency in the region that serves offenders. She says they receive more than 200 referrals each year.
She says if need continues to increase, they have may to start a waiting list.
