A U.S. senator from South Dakota who visited George McGovern in hospice care says the former three-term senator was resting comfortably.
Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson says McGovern "seemed peaceful and at rest" on Friday afternoon.
Johnson says his prayers are with McGovern and his family.
McGovern entered a Sioux Falls hospice care on Monday. Family members say McGovern is no longer responsive and nearing the end of his life.
McGovern was the Democratic presidential candidate who lost to President Richard Nixon in 1972 in a historic landslide. He was a member of the U.S. House from 1957 to 1961 and a U.S. senator from 1963 to 1981.
In recent years, he turned his focus to world hunger.
