Disabled SD Veterans Can Get Property Tax Break

Military veterans who are permanently and totally disabled because of service-related injuries have only a short time left to apply for a new South Dakota program that grants them a partial exemption on
their property taxes.
The state Revenue Department reports that eligible veterans or the unmarried surviving spouses of eligible veterans must apply before Nov. 1 at county assessors' offices.
The program exempts the first $100,000 of valuation of a disabled veteran's property from taxes. The exemption applies to a house, garage and lot.
Because local government budgets and tax levies for property taxes payable in 2013 have already been set, veterans eligible for the program will first see a reduction in their property taxes payable in 2014.
