Tuesday was the National Kidney Foundation’s ‘Kidney Awareness Day,’ and a couple hundred people from the Sioux Empire gathered to get educated.
Doctors, patients, donors, and those who just wanted to learn more were taught all about the organ and how to keep it healthy.
Ben Ekerm had a kidney transplant just two months ago, and he said being a part of Tuesday’s gathering is his way of helping people after his new lease on life.
“It's kind of my thing to pay it forward now. To help as many people as I can become aware and know about kidney disease and what options are out there for them,” said Ben Ekrem, a Kidney Foundation Volunteer.
Ekrem also said donating a kidney costs people nothing, except a little bit of pain.
