The annual Rake the Town event began early Friday morning and hundreds of volunteers showed up to help Sioux Falls residents rake their yards. Worker's On Wheels put on the event and recruited volunteers to help out residents who were unable to clean their own yards.
Homeowner Delores Hilmoe has signed up for the last four years to have her yard raked and she said she is grateful for help.
“It makes it so much easier for those of us who are living in our own homes who can't do our own work and we really appreciate the volunteers that help out in so many different ways,” said Hilmoe.
The program helps serve individuals over age 60 who are not financially or physically able to do the work themselves.
Ashley Esplend started volunteering three years ago with Wells Fargo coworkers and said there is nothing better than lending a hand to those in need.
"We look forward to it every year. It’s the best time of year,” Esplend said. “We love being here and we have a ton of fun doing it.”
As the crew packed up and headed to their next home, Hilmoe had one thing left to say those who helped out.
"I appreciate their help so much and hope they all have a great day. I know all the people they are helping won't appreciate them as much as I do,” she said.
The annual event typically lasts for two days and volunteers include church groups, students and businesses all wanting to help out.
