Police say the driver in a high-speed chase in central Sioux Falls that ended with a vehicle rollover Friday afternoon suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Officials say the chase started shortly before 3 p.m. with a report of a stolen vehicle. Officers spotted the license plate described as the report was broadcast and attempted to pull it over near 8th Street and Prairie Avenue.
The 17-year-old driver of the stolen Chevy Trailblazer pulled away from officers at a high rate of speed, say officials, and drove through a couple stop signs.
Officers ended the pursuit and turned off their lights after a few blocks. Shortly after, they watched the vehicle swerve to avoid another vehicle pulling out of an alley, lose control, and hit two trees before the vehicle rolled. An officer involved in the chase said the driver was traveling close to 100 mph in a residential area.
The driver was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with a broken pelvis and other unnamed injuries. He faces several charges, including grand theft, aggravated eluding, and reckless driving.
Police say the owner of the Trailblazer had left the vehicle running and unlocked to run inside a house. The vehicle was totaled in the crash.
