GOP's Fiegen Elected To SD Utilities Panel

Bookmark and Share

Republican Kristie Fiegen has won a new term on the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission.

The 50-year-old Fiegen defeated Democratic challenger Matt McGovern for a six-year term on the commission that regulates grain warehouses and natural gas, electric and telephone utilities.

Fiegen is a former state lawmaker who was appointed to the PUC last year to fill a vacancy on the commission.

The 40-year-old McGovern is a Sioux Falls lawyer and grandson of former Sen. George McGovern. He criticized Fiegen and the other two members of the PUC for not doing enough to protect farmers who lost money when they sold sunflowers to a failed grain-buying company that cannot pay them.

Fiegen countered that the commission did everything it could under current law to protect those farmers.
