SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Cameron McCaffrey led Augustana (1-0) to a 54-48 win over Jamestown College (2-2) in its 2012-13 season opener scoring 20 points. Neither team shot better than 40 percent on the night but the Vikings used double-figure games from McCaffrey and freshman Daniel Jansen in the win. In his first collegiate start, Jansen finished with 13 points and six rebounds.

Augustana improves to 46-43 all-time in season openers and 27-5 in home openers. The Vikings have now won seven straight games over Jamestown. Tonight's game was an exhibition contest for the Jimmies.

Augustana shot just 35 percent from the field on 15 of 45 shooting and was 2 of 21 from 3-point range. Jamestown shot just 30 percent from the field and was 5 of 26 (19 percent) from 3-point range.

Augustana and Jamestown both shot poorly in the first half and the teams went into halftime with Augustana leading 21-14. The Vikings shot 26 percent from the field while the Jimmies were 6 of 27 shooting (22 percent).

Neither team could find the basket from 3-point range as the Vikings were 0 of 14 from 3-point range and the Jimmies were 1 of 14. Breshion Tucker, Davon Thomas and Jared Sutherland each had 13 points for Jamestown.

After scoring the first six points of the game, Augustana went on a 10-4 run over seven minutes of play to take a 16-6 lead. Jamestown closed out the half on an 8-5 run and Augustana took a 21-14 lead into halftime.  There were a few dry spells in the half where neither team could find the basket, including a two minute stretch where neither team scored.

Jamestown came out of firing in the second half making it a one point game trailing Augustana 29-28 just under four minutes into the half.

Augustana pulled ahead and extended its lead to eight (44-36) after a 3-pointer by freshman Joe Burt at the 10-minute mark. Jamestown owned the next three minutes of the game and knotted the score at 47 with just 2:25 left in the game.

McCaffrey took the young Vikings on his back and drove the lane to put Augustana up 49-47 with 1:31 left. Davon Thomas went 1 of 1 from the line on Jamestown's next possession and McCaffrey was fouled on next opportunity and hit two free throws to give Augustana a three-point 51-48 lead.

Jamestown would miss two straight 3-pointers and McCaffrey put the game on ice with two more from the charity stripe as the Vikings went on to win 54-48.

Augustana continues non-conference play at home next Wednesday taking on Dakota Wesleyan at 8 p.m. at the Elmen Center.
