A mining company has filed notice with the state of its intent to explore for gold and other minerals around its site near Savoy and Spearfish Canyon.
The South Dakota Department of Natural and Environmental Resources is expected to rule on the request from Deadwood Standard Project within 30 days.
The Valentine Mining Company, which is doing business as Deadwood Standard Project, has sought to create a 424-acre gold mine near the rim of Spearfish Canyon.
DENR engineer manager Mike Cepak says there have been many exploration sites around the Black Hills, but few turn up to have anything in them.
But he says further exploration of the site could be done to check the continuity of ore bodies and find new ones.
