The youngest member of the reticulated giraffe family at the Great Plains Zoo has a grown up name.
Zoo officials announced Friday the giraffe, born in July, would be called Gerald. The name was selected through a contest that also served as a fundraiser for the zoo.
Two little girls from Rapid City nominated the winning name. Katie Palmer, who is 5, and 3-year-old Addie Palmer submitted Gerald in honor of the grandpa, who brings them to the zoo. As their prize, they met a giraffe up close and spoke with zookeepers who care for the giraffes at the Great Plains Zoo.
Zoo officials say the contest raised more than $1,700. That money will go toward taking care of all the animals at the zoo.
Sixty-one names were submitted to the contest. The other top name was Stelten.
