Jacks lose at buzzer again!

Bookmark and Share

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – For the second time in its three games, and in both games in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project, a late three-pointer by the home team sank the Jackrabbits, the latest coming in a 66-63 loss at Hofstra on Friday.

“You have to give Hofstra a lot of credit. They were everything that I’ve been trying to get our players to feel, they were humble and hungry. They were humble and hungry and they played harder,” head coach Scott Nagy said. “We have to shoot the ball better, 5-for-20 from three isn’t going to win us a lot of basketball games, and we can’t give up 16 offensive rebounds.”

Trailing for most of the second half, Nate Wolters tied the game up at 63 with a three-pointer with 32 seconds left in the game. Hofstra inbounded the ball and did not take a timeout to draw up a play, but rather put the ball in the hands of Shaquille Stokes, who hit a long three-pointer from the left wing with three seconds left to put the Pride up 66-63.

Brayden Carlson did get a shot off for the Jacks from the left corner, but it clanked off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 1-2 on the season, while Hofstra improves to 1-2 after opening the home schedule with a win.

Wolters led all players with 25 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth career double-double. Carlson added 12 points in the loss.

Steve Mejia and Taran Buie both finished with 14 points to lead the Pride. Stokes finished with nine points.

The Jackrabbits took the early lead, and led by seven point at 23-16 on a Carlson jumper 6:51 on the first half clock, but the Pride came right back with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to tie the game at 25-all.

SDSU would get the lead back though, and took a 32-31 lead into the locker room, despite shooting 36.7 percent in the half, including a 2-for-12 effort from three-point range (16.7 percent.)

Hofstra took the lead on a pair of free throws early in the second half, and minus two quick lead changes with just under 15 minutes to play, led for the entirety of the second half, but never by more than five points.

Bench points and second chance points made the difference down the stretch. The Hofstra bench outscored the Jacks 26-7, and the Pride got 18 second chance points, compared to nine from SDSU.

The Jacks did shoot 50 percent in the second half on 11-of-22 shooting, but, minus the two late threes from Wolters, continued to struggle from three-point range, posting a 37.5 shooting percentage on 3-of-8 shooting.

The Jacks look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, when they take on Marshall at 2:30 p.m. ET, 1:30 p.m. CT.

NOTES: Hofstra leads the all-time series with SDSU 1-0 … Wolters posted his sixth career double-double, his second points-rebounds double-double, the last being an 18 point, 10 rebound night at Western Illinois on Jan. 1, 2011 … Wolters’ 10 rebounds ties a career-high, which he set at Western Illinois on Jan. 13, 2011 … Taévaunn Prince made his third-career start in the game, his first of the season, and his first since he started at Western Illinois on Dec. 3, 2011 … Carlson scored in double figures for the first time this season … the Jackrabbits also started the 2011-12 season at 1-2, but won eight of their next nine games
