McCaffrey leads Augie past Dakota State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Cameron McCaffrey moved into the top 10 all-time scoring list at Augustana with 21 points helping Augustana to a 66-47 win over Dakota State on Monday night in Sioux Falls. Augustana improves to 4-0 on the season, marking its first 4-0 start since the 2009 season. Tonight’s game was an exhibition contest for Dakota State.

McCaffrey now has 1,383 points and passed Rich Chapman who scored 1,381 career points from 1973-77.

Augustana used a late run to pull away from Dakota State midway through the second half. Daniel Jansen finished the game with seven points and five rebounds while Alex Richter picked up nine points on 4 of 9 shooting and six rebounds.

Yusuf Vinson was the only player from Dakota State in double figures finishing with 10 points, and was 6 of 6 from the free throw line.

Augustana shot 43 percent from the field for the game but was just 7 of 17 from the free throw line and 5 of 22 from 3-point range in the game. Dakota State hit 6 3-pointers on 17 attempts and finished the game 15 of 38 from the field shooting 39 percent.

Augustana got off to a fast start opening the game on a 7-0 run in the first minute and a half. Jansen scored the game’s first basket on a strong move down low before Richter flew down the court on a fastbreak to put Augustana up 4-0. McCaffrey then drilled a 3-pointer forcing Dakota State into an early timeout.

Augustana extended its lead to 10 at 18-8 with 14:09 to play in the first half when Huisken hit a pull-up jumper from the wing on an excellent dish by Taylor.

Dakota State went on a 17-7 run over the next 10 minutes of the game to take its first lead of the game. Marcus Smith drilled a 3-pointer at the 5:06 mark to put Dakota State in front 23-21.

Augustana closed out the final four minutes of the first half on a 13-6 run to regain the lead and take a 34-29 lead into the locker room.

Jansen tied the game at 29 with 1:13 to play and McCaffrey hit two buckets in the final 47 seconds, including a 3-pointer with two seconds left to put the Vikings back in front.

Augustana finished the first half with 10 offensive rebounds that led to 12 second-chance points. The Vikings shot 40 percent from the field but were just 3 of 12 from the 3-point range in the half. Dakota State was 9 of 17 shooting (53 percent) in the half, including 4 of 7 from behind the arc.

McCaffrey finished the first half with 15 points on 5 of 11 shooting, followed by Jansen who finished with seven.

Augustana came out hot in the second half going on an 18-7 run in the first eight minutes to take a 52-36 lead. In the run Joe Burt pushed Augustana’s lead to 10 drilling his first 3-pointer of the game.

Dakota State went 10 minutes without a basket as the Vikings were able to push their lead to 57-36 with 5:27 left in the game. Luke Lamb got the Trojans on the board hitting back-to-back free throws at the 3:51 mark to make the score 57-38.

Augustana finished the game scoring 36 points in the paint and 23 points off turnovers. Brennan Olson finished the game 4 of 5 shooting for eight points. Joe Burt, Leif Nomeland and Zach Huisken each scored five points in the game.

Augustana will open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Dec. 1 hosting Wayne State at 6 p.m.
