Public safety officials say early reports indicate for the first time in 10 years, there were no fatal traffic accidents during the Thanksgiving holiday in South Dakota.
Officials with the state department of public safety say statistic show the last time no one was killed on South Dakota highways during the popular travel weekend was 2003. They do say late reports from the weekend could still come in, but so far they appear to be favorable.
Public safety officials credit the SD Highway Patrol's Operation Safe, a high visibility operation held the day before Thanksgiving, with safer driving.
Statewide during Operation Safe, troopers responded to 31 crashes, made six DUI arrests and 9 drug arrests, and assisted 38 drivers on the highway.
