Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Alex Meyer from the Washington Nationals in exchange for center fielder Denard Span.

Meyer, 22, was drafted 23rd overall by the Nationals in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Kentucky.  The 6-foot-9, 220-pound right-hander went 10-6 with a 2.86 ERA (129.0 IP, 41 ER), 45 walks and 139 strikeouts in 25 starts between Single-A Hagerstown and Single-A Potomac last season. The Indiana native was also selected to play in the Futures Game in Kansas City this past season.  Meyer entered the 2012 season as the sixth best prospect in the Nationals organization by Baseball America.

Span, who was originally drafted by the Twins in the first round (20th overall) of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, appeared in 589 games for the Twins hitting .284 with 230 RBI and 90 stolen bases over parts of five major league seasons.
