College Offering Scholarships To CTU Students

In light of the news that CTU is closing it's doors, another college is reaching out. Officials at Kilian Community College say they can't offer help to all CTU students because they are a community college and CTU IS a four year college, but say they would like to offer help at least some of them.

Officials at Kilian Community College in Sioux Falls say they had no idea Colorado Technical University had plans to close. Director of Financial Aid, Carolyn Halgerson says when she heard the news, she was thinking of their the school's staff and especially their students. After all, some of them went to Kilian before landing at CTU.

Kilian Community College Dir. of Financial Aid, Carolyn Halgerson said, "All of a sudden, they're facing an interruption in their career goals, their education goals so it's a huge feeling of sadness."

Halgerson says competing for students among so many other schools is tough, especially in this economy.

Halgerson said, "I think there are some obvious trends in higher education, obviously the trend of less high school graduates has been a concern of across higher education for a number of years and financing from a student's perspective is a huge concern. 'How am I going to pay for this?'"

So, their scholarship committee decided to act. They're now offering any current CTU student a $500 transfer scholarship, given that they succesfully completed their most recent semester at at the school.

"Not only do we want these students, we want to be able to help them make that transition," said Halgerson.

KDLT did try contacting CTU President David Heflin. He did not return our phone call in a request for an interview.

We contacted Southeast Technical Institute to see if they had any similar plans to try to recruit CTU students to their campus. As of right now, they have not discussed any plans to do so.
