A group of parents is considering a petition drive to challenge the Sioux Falls School Board's plan to close three small elementary schools in South Dakota's largest city and replace them with one large school.
Parent Matt Gage says the group must determine what the law allows and whether volunteers are willing to circulate the petition. The station reports that the group would need up to 15,000 petition signatures to put the school consolidation plan to a public vote.
Two of the existing schools are to close in 2015, with the third shutting down the following year. The new two-story replacement school would open in August 2015.
District administrators say the consolidation will save about $810,000 a year. Opponents say small neighborhood schools are better for students.
