Streets were blocked off and a middle school was on lockdown Monday afternoon after police say a man barricaded himself in a house.
The incident took place near the 400 block of north Indiana Avenue, which is near Whittier Middle School.
According to authorities, the man was armed and was having thoughts about harming himself. When officers responded to the scene the man refused to leave the home.
Whittier Middle School went on lockdown.
The Sioux Falls School District said kids who normally walk home from school were being kept inside until police gave the all clear. Students who ride the bus were loaded in an area away from the situation. Parents who normally pick their children up from school had to come inside the building to check them out.
Police say the incident started shortly before 3 p.m.
Swat teams were called to the scene around 6 p.m., and the man was taken in custody.
