Yankton School Superintendent Resigning In June

Bookmark and Share

The school superintendent in Yankton is resigning in June, but he says the decision has nothing to do with his October drunken driving arrest.

Joseph Gertsema says he's making the decision because he feels it's time for a new challenge.

Gertsema has been Yankton's school superintendent for 23 years and says few stay in a district that long. He says he's grateful for the opportunity.

Gertsema was arrested in October at a Highway Patrol checkpoint near Vermillion after police said he failed a sobriety test. He apologized after the incident to his family and the community for his "bad decision" to drive after drinking.
