Despite a sluggish national economy, manufacturing exports out of South Dakota have been solid in 2012.
Rock Nelson, director of the state's International Trade Center says the state exported nearly $1.5 billion of manufactured products in 2011. That doesn't include grains and livestock. He expects 2012 exports to exceed that figure.
Nelson says the future is bright for exporting. South Dakota-based companies are seeing increased foreign business with the potential for a domestic rebound next year.
Nelson's organization began in 2011 with a boost from the governor's office of economic development and the business community. It offers free advice and support for businesses contemplating exporting overseas.
