A Madison man's steady hands served him well as a dentist, and now they're helping him with a new hobby: wood carving.
Bernie Schuurmans took up the hobby about two years ago after being encouraged for years by one of his dental patients. The patient, Dale Goreham, has his own shop and has been teaching Schuurmans techniques.
So far, Schuurmans has completed several carvings, including ones of Santas, cowboys and Native Americans.
His efforts earned him an honorable mention in the Dakota Masterworks art show in October, which is open to artist older than 60.
