On Sunday at about 2:04 a.m., a Minnehaha County Dodge Charger Patrol Car driven by Deputy in field training Derek Gulbrandson and passenger, Field Training Officer Deputy Phillip Leidholt, was heading southbound on Six mile Road near its intersection with Rice Street.
A Mercury Sable driven by Trevor Allen Buckholtz with a passenger was northbound on Six Mile Road. The Mercury Sable swerved into the southbound lane while still traveling northbound. Deputy Gulbrandson attempted to move out of the way but was unable to avoid a collision. The Mercury Sable crashed into the driver’s side door of the patrol car near the west shoulder forcing it off the road and into the west ditch. The Mercury Sable continued into the ditch, through a fence and eventually became disabled in a pasture. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
Deputy Gulbrandson received minor injuries to his left knee and Deputy Leidholt was not injured. Buckholtz and his passenger were transported to a Sioux Falls hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Buckholtz was charged with Possession of drug paraphernalia and Marijuana, Ingestion of marijuana, reckless driving, DUI Drugs, no driver’s license and no seatbelt.
The S.D. Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident.
